PLATE XI
The Arm Triangle
Kata-gatame

- 01
Secure side control with your chest heavy upon the patient. The near arm is to be trapped across their own throat, elbow tucked to your ribs so it cannot escape.
- 02
Thread your far arm beneath their neck, seeking to clasp your own biceps or wrist on the opposite side. The head is thus cradled as a surgeon cradles a skull before incision.
- 03
Draw your elbows together as though closing a ledger book. Do not pull upward. The compression must travel inward, not away from the body.
- 04Precision point
Rotate your hips so that your chest presses down through the angle of their jaw and their own trapped shoulder. This is the marrow of the technique: the choke is not made by the arms but by the weight of the torso descending through the skull toward the mat.
- 05
Walk your knees forward to flatten their hips, denying escape by bridge or roll. Stillness in your base ensures the pressure remains constant.
- 06
Hold with patience. The patient's own shoulder and forearm will occlude the carotid vessels on one side while your trunk occludes the other. Release the instant the body slackens.
