PLATE XXVI

The Toe Hold

Ashi-dori-garami

Engraved plate illustrating The Toe Hold
Plate rendered by AI in the manner of the old engravers, drawn from reference. We are refining every figure toward anatomical exactness; some plates are near perfect and a few still carry small errors.
Difficulty IV of X
  1. 01

Secure the opponent's leg in the manner of the leg entanglement, hips lower than the captured knee, controlling the far ankle before any turn of the foot is attempted.

  2. 02

Cup the instep with both hands, one palm beneath the sole and one across the top of the foot, fingers laced as a surgeon laces before a fracture reduction.

  3. 03

Draw the captured foot to the sternum, not the abdomen, so the leverage arm shortens and the ankle cannot bend to escape the hold.

  4. 04Precision point

Rotate the foot along its own axis, as if opening a stuck jar lid, keeping the knee's line entirely uninvolved in the twist.

  5. 05

Apply steady rotational pressure without jerking, permitting the tissues to announce their limit before the joint does.

  6. 06

Release at once upon the tap or at the first sound from the joint, for the ankle mortise yields suddenly and without warning cracks.
