PLATE XXXVIII

The Back Escape

Engraved plate illustrating The Back Escape
Plate rendered by AI in the manner of the old engravers, drawn from reference. We are refining every figure toward anatomical exactness; some plates are near perfect and a few still carry small errors.
Difficulty VII of X
  1. 01

Upon feeling the hooks enter and the chest press against the back, immediately secure the chin with both hands, elbows drawn tight to the ribs, denying the choking arm its passage beneath the jaw.

  2. 02

Walk the hips to one side, flattening the spine somewhat against the opponent's chest, so that the body no longer presents a clean line for strangulation.

  3. 03Precision point

Reach back with the hand on the same side as the hip shift and pry the lower hook from the thigh, peeling it upward at the heel rather than pulling at the shin.

  4. 04

Once the lower hook is broken, trap that same leg beneath your own by dropping the hip fully to the mat, pinning the freed limb before the opponent can reinsert it.

  5. 05

Turn into the opponent, chest to chest, using the trapped leg as a post, and drive the shoulder through to flatten them beneath you.

  6. 06

Consolidate in side control or half guard, hands still guarding the neck until base is fully recovered.
