PLATE XIX

The Omoplata

Ashi-sankaku-garami

Engraved plate illustrating The Omoplata
Plate rendered by AI in the manner of the old engravers, drawn from reference. We are refining every figure toward anatomical exactness; some plates are near perfect and a few still carry small errors.

  1. 01

From closed guard, secure the wrist as the opponent leans forward, breaking the line of his posture before he may set it.

  2. 02

Swim the near arm across and under his same-side arm, threading it deep to the far hip, as though passing thread through cloth.

  3. 03

Rotate the hips outward, bringing the far leg over his back and the near leg beneath his head, forming the triangle-of-the-legs about his trapped arm.

  4. 04

Release the wrist grip only once the leg triangle is sealed. Sit up onto the elbow and begin to walk the hips perpendicular to his spine.

  5. 05Precision point

Keep the trapped hand pinned flat to the mat or to the belt at all times, never permitting it to rise, for a raised hand steals the lever entire.

  6. 06

Drive the hips forward and down in a slow, continuous arc, lifting through the sacrum rather than pulling with the arms, until the shoulder yields.

  7. 07

Should he roll to escape the pin, follow the rotation without releasing the leg triangle, arriving again at the same angle from the far side.
