PLATE XXXI

The Butterfly Sweep

Sumi-gaeshi lineage

Engraved plate illustrating The Butterfly Sweep
Plate rendered by AI in the manner of the old engravers, drawn from reference. We are refining every figure toward anatomical exactness; some plates are near perfect and a few still carry small errors.
Difficulty V of X
  1. 01

Seated before the adversary, insert both feet as hooks to the inner thighs, knees bent, shins active as living hinges.

  2. 02

Secure the near sleeve with one hand and the same-side collar or triceps with the other, drawing the upper body forward into a rounded, controllable shape.

  3. 03

Break the adversary's base by pulling his posture down and across, loading his weight onto the leg you intend to elevate.

  4. 04Precision point

At the instant his weight settles fully onto the loaded side, drive the hook on that side upward and outward along a diagonal, not vertical, path, while the opposite hand pulls his same-side sleeve across his own centerline.

  5. 05

Follow the rotation with your hips, turning onto the same shoulder you are lifting toward, and rise to the mount as his structure completes its fall.

  6. 06

Settle weight immediately upon arrival, securing the new position before seeking further control.
